Susan Ann Newton was born Feb. 19, 1848, in Cleveland County, N.C., the daughter of B.B. Newton and Jemima Pruett Newton. Susan married William Bumgardner (Nov. 17, 1845-March 27, 1926), on Feb. 18, 1866. Eleven children were born to this marriage: Dovie Frances, Sarah Ann, Amanda, John Franklin, Mary, Etta, Benjamin T., Rosa, Carrie, Bessie and Texie. This photograph taken in 1935 is of five generations of the family, including Susan (87). The Rev. Andre Carlo Swofford (49) was the son of Dovie Francis Bumgardner Swofford (67) and Joseph Martin Swofford. Also pictured are the Rev. Swofford's daughter Ruth Bunch (27) and granddaughter Barbara Bunch Meacham (2). Susan died on April 2, 1941, in Cleveland County and is buried at Casar Baptist Church cemetery.
